‘One of my first memories is of San Xavier del Bac,’ the former Phoenix mayor and Arizona attorney general says of the 18th-century Catholic mission south of Tucson, his hometown. ‘My dad [former Arizona governor Sam Goddard Jr.] was the first president of the Tucson Festival Society, and they did the procession down the hill to the church, and that is etched in my memory.’
Another old church has consumed much of his adult life: Phoenix First Baptist Church on Monroe Street and Third Avenue, built between 1928 and 1929. In May, Goddard welcomed Valley movers and shakers to the grand opening of The Abbey on Monroe, an event space that rose from the literal ashes of the historical sanctuary. “…the walls can help tell the story of the building, pointing out coloration patterns and scars to the building walls that were caused by the fire and subsequent exposure to the elements after the roof came down.
'It was a lot of work but we didn’t try to pretty up the building; the building is what it is,’ Goddard said.
Some of the notable original features in the building include an ornate window in the shape of a rose on the wall that faces Monroe, and a 100-foot-tall bell tower. The fire exposed a style of wall tiles that were rare to find in Arizona…”
