  • 1883

    Phoenix First Baptist Church is founded

  • 1903

    Cornerstone for the new church is laid on the corner of 3rd Avenue & Monroe

  • 1912

    The church building is leveled to make way for larger, more modern structure

  • 1930

    The new church is dedicated

  • 1950

    A new addition is built on the west side of the church

  • 1968

    The First Baptist Congregation holds its final church service at the 3rd Avenue Church and relocates to its new facility on Glendale Avenue

  • 1982

    The church is added to the National Register of Historic Places

  • 1984

    A fire is set inside the church and spreads out of control, causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage

  • 1992

    The church is declared a hazard by city officials and gets set for demolition

  • 1993

    The church is purchased by Housing Opportunity Center Inc. and is renamed The Monroe Street Abbey

  • 1996

    “The Monroe Street Abbey Apartments,” low-income housing apartments, are constructed next door to the church

  • 2024

    The Monroe Street Abbey prepares to reopen to the public
